The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year educational programme that is provided universally in more than 140 countries. It is a challenging curriculum that can be completed by successfully passing the final examinations. The programme is aimed at 16- to 19-year-olds who are looking for opportunities to study at renowned universities and study advanced topics.

IBDP schools have a tough curriculum that challenges the student to think and create beyond the baseline. It encourages creative expression and demands quick, analytic and independent thinking skills.

There are only two Indian Schools in Japan that offer the IB Diploma Programme. The schools are certified by the IB Board and need to have the infrastructure and teaching aids needed to support this advanced programme.

The IBDP School curriculum

The IBDP curriculum can be narrowed down to two main components. The three DP core elements and the subjects that are studied under it.

The IBO Board has planned this curriculum in a very systematic fashion and this is followed in every IBDP school around the globe. As this programme begins after students complete Grade 10, it becomes important to choose a school that is invested in this so that it makes your life simpler.

The DP core elements

Theory of Knowledge

This core element is based on the fact that students need to understand the subject in order to master it completely. It covers the theory that one learns and how they could apply it into their daily life. The learning process is open and guided and students are allowed to experiment and step out of their comfort zones. They are encouraged to think creatively and analytically while making decisions.

Extended Essay

This is a mandated essay of 4000 words that students write based on their research and understanding of a particular topic. The students get creative freedom to explain the topic in a way that they feel is fitting. This essay contributes three points in the IB programme.

Creativity, Action and Service (CAS)

This core element focuses on the fact that each student is part of a global society and hence has a role to play in it. It teaches them the value of working together towards the common goal of success while developing interpersonal skills and a strong value system.

While Indian Public schools and Private schools give students the freedom to study and experiment with the subject individually, they are always guided and helped by teachers so that they never get stuck and are on the right track.

The IBDP Subject Groups

The subjects learnt in Grade 10 provide the base and help the students decide their career path and, in this case, choose the six subjects they wish to study in IBDP School. These 6 subject groups are framed keeping in mind the global scale of the programme.

·         Studies in Language and Literature

·         Individuals and Societies

·         Sciences

·         Mathematics

·         Language Acquisition

·         The arts

For the subject groups, students have the choice to opt out of the arts and choose another science or language study to supplement it correctly.

Each of these subject groups come with a long list of courses one can pick from at your Indian public or private school. These courses can be completed at the Standard Level or at the Higher Level. The difference between both the levels is the scope of study and the availability of resources. The courses picked for Higher Level have more in-depth study of the subject and therefore take more time to master.

The subjects taken at the Standard Level are based on a broader understanding of the concepts and hence take lesser time to complete. There are a specific number of hours allotted to each course on the basis of this. Students can choose up to 3 minimum Higher-Level courses (Maximum is 4) and the rest of Standard Level.

Tips to choose the right IBDP courses in Indian Public schools and private schools

Indian Public Schools and Private Schools assist the students to  identify their strengths and weaknesses. These assessments help students know which subjects they are good at and what subjects they are interested in. With this broad perspective, students can narrow down to a bucket list of subjects that they would like to study.

Based on this list, you can decide on the subjects you like the most or choose the topics you are most interested in and pick these subjects for the higher level . The courses that you have less interest in can be opted out or can be kept for the standard level. It is advisable to read through the aims and details of each course to completely understand the offerings and also consult the teachers.

You can also look at the courses, from the perspective of how you like to study. Do you prefer the theoretical way more or do you completely grasp concepts when addressed practically? Understanding which course brings about the balance between these two or veers towards your preferred mode of learning will help you make your choice easily.

Tips to keep in mind while choosing an IBDP School

The school has to have up to date facilities so that students can try out new things and experiment freely. This is most applicable in the fields of science and technology. The school needs teachers who are always available and support the students in every way. The school should be well aware about the curriculum and its offerings and do their best while preparing the students while sticking to the core elements of IBDP.

There are different Public and Private Schools offering this opportunity to gain more knowledge through IBDP. Private schools offer the programme to deserving students who are willing and excited to take up the challenge and study courses that will help broaden their vision and gain fresh insight on how the world runs.

All schools offering this programme are renowned and known for their high quality of education, state-of-the-art infrastructure and dedicated faculty. Along with the advantage of attaining knowledge and having the ability to solve difficult problems, this programme also guarantees acceptance into universities all around the world.
