WiFi signal amplifier

There are a lot of these devices on the market. I’m not talking about some Chinese repeaters, of which there are tons on online stores. Below I will show you a few models of repeaters from popular manufacturers, which deserve your attention. Of course, this is purely my opinion. You do not have to choose only among these devices.

To find the best WiFi signal repeater, it is necessary to thoroughly test all the devices that are on the market. And that’s practically impossible. Plus, conditions are different for everyone, and the model I have shown excellent results in terms of coverage and speed may work very poorly for you. And as a rule, the more expensive the amplifier, the better, faster, and more efficient. If you go with a wireless router then you will change the setting anytime on Myrepeater web address.

TP-Link RE305

A popular model of dual-band WiFi signal repeater. I already did a review of it and wrote the setup instructions.

One of the best WiFi repeaters from TP-Link.

There is 1 Ethernet port (up to 100 Mbps). Wireless speed in the 5 GHz band up to 867 Mbps. In the 2.4 GHz range up to 300 Mbps. Interesting appearance and external antennas that can be folded down. There is a button for a quick connection to the router.

There is also support for OneMesh starting with hardware version V3 and on firmware from the end of 2019. Of the minuses: the price and a small network range in the 5 GHz range (but this is instead a feature of this range).

You can also look at TP-Link RE205 – a similar but cheaper model.

Asus RP-N12

An inexpensive amplifier from ASUS that supports only one 2.4 GHz band. The speed is up to 300 Mbps. LAN-port up to 100 Mbps.

Of the disadvantages: cuts the speed by about two times (like all similar devices), sometimes it hangs and has to be rebooted.

TP-Link AC750 RE200

A more affordable (compared to TP-Link RE305) model of WiFi signal repeater from TP-Link. There is support for both bands (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz) and the 802.11ac standard. There are a lot of reviews for this model in various online stores. You can read my instructions for setting up this device.

There are no particular problems with it.

Xiaomi Mi WiFi Amplifier PRO

It is for fans of Xiaomi technology. Inexpensive amplifier with support for only one band (2.4 GHz). Two external WiFi antennas. Stylish appearance.

There may be problems with the setup—MiHome app, Xiaomi account, region issues, etc.

TP-Link TL-WA854RE

Another popular model of WiFi amplifier from TP-Link. This time it is already single-band (2.4 GHz, 802.11n). This model is new, but it has already received a lot of positive feedback.

Please note that this model is not equipped with an Ethernet port.

TP-Link AC1200 RE300 (with Mesh support)

An excellent model that supports Mesh. When connected to a router from a line of OneMesh creates a seamless WiFi network. Can work with regular routers. Operates on two bands.

No Ethernet port. Antennas are built into the case. There is a night mode that turns off the indicators at a given time.

There are many good models from other manufacturers: Tenda, D-Link, Mercusys, Toto link, Zyxel, etc. So the choice is very wide for any task and any budget.

You also must consider RangeXTD before buying any wifi extenders.

Conclusions

Suppose you can do without a WiFi signal amplifier (for instance, you may want to move the router closer to the center of the apartment). In that case, it is advisable to take advantage of this opportunity.

When you can’t do without an amplifier, consider creating a seamless WiFi network, especially if you have a large private house or a huge apartment. For this, you need either a WiFi Mesh system or a router and repeater (or two routers) that support Mesh technology. For example, maybe you already have a very old router, and you will change it for a Mesh system or a router that supports Mesh technology. You buy a repeater or another router that supports the same technology.

If you don’t need seamless WiFi or that expense is out of your budget, I recommend choosing a regular but dual-band WiFi signal booster. With it, you’ll have a better chance of getting faster connection speeds.

If a dual-band model is also out of your budget, choose something from a single-band model. There are plenty on the market right now with plenty to choose from. You can check out some models on AliExpress. Just type “WiFi Repeater” into your search. But be prepared for frequent outages, severe speed drops, and difficulty in the setup process.

Repeaters will evolve towards WiFi Mesh technology, and of course, the new WiFi 6 standard (802.11ax), as routers supporting this standard are already starting to appear on the market. The 802.11ac (WiFi 5 GHz) standard will also be relevant for a long time to come. You can safely choose such repeaters in 2020 and 2021, both for a private house and an apartment. And devices that support a single 2.4 GHz band (the 802.11n standard) will most likely gradually disappear from the market.
